Care & Concern

Our organisation can be traced back to 1976 when Father Kevin Caldwell suggested to Bishop Gerry to facilitate the localisation of Social Welfare Services in the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

In July 1990 our Parish held a meeting to re-establish the former Group which more or less ceased to exist.  Father Keith Turnbull was Parish Priest at that time.

This is where my involvement began.  We held a meeting to establish what services would best help our community.

It was decided Transport, Visits and Handymen were needed and four ladies offered to do repairs and alterations to clothing that belonged to those who resided at Ozcare, at Labrador and De Paul Villa at Ashmore.

Our firstly monthly meeting was held in what used to be The Star of the Sea Library rooms.  After a couple of years we moved over to the Southport Community Hall in the Church grounds.  When extensions were completed at Ashmore, we moved in there where we still have an office.

I applied for a Grant from Jupiter’s Casino and was successful.  This enabled us to purchase a new computer, and accessories, large office desk and two chairs, and three cupboards.

In 2002 Malcolm was studying I.T. at Griffith University and was able to get permission for him and his group to design a Data Base just for our special needs.  Prior to this all work was done manually.  We now have a great recording system.

As well as helping people in the general community we provide services in several hostels namely, Ozcare, De Paul Villa, Ashmore Lodge, Abri for the Aged, Southport Lodge, Masonic Care and The Domain.

As of July 2010 we have 20 volunteers, each volunteer does one transport a week.  This task is usually to take clients to the Gold Coast Hospital, specialist’s clinics, dental, physio centres and some shopping and banking.

New members are always welcome.

We pray that Our Lord will see that we always have enough people to continue His worthwhile work.
